poem

Wind

When wind is happy,
He sends little breezes across the Earth.
It makes me cheerful,
In the berth.

When wind is feeling cheeky,
He sends my hat flying.
It makes me irritated,
For I have to go chasing.

When wind is angry,
He sends great gales across the land
It makes me afraid
Of the crashing bands.

When wind is frustrated
He sends heat waves everywhere
It makes me fidgety
In my room.

poem

I Had a Dream

I had a dream of a faraway land
and it was ruled
by a wise hand
named fantasy.

There were galloping horses
upon them, knights of armour
and there were forces
controlled by dark arts.

There was a king who alone sat
upon the grand and mighty throne
and there on a cushion was a cat
giving out silent snores.

There was a castle which alone stood
upon a green and tall hill
and no one could
penetrate its walls.

There was the sea
glimmering in the sun
and there was no one but she
standing alone by the pier.

There were palm trees
and monkeys throwing coconuts
there were hives of bees
busy making honey.

I wake up to the start
of a new day and I think,
“I will play a part
in the play of life.”

The Journey

Dawn had just broken, and the sunglow was painted all over the serene sky to announce the start of a fresh new day. As far as we could see, everything was tranquil, and all was peaceful. There was no sound to be heard except for the regular “clip-clop” of the horses’ hooves on the dusty ground. There were brick towers standing high above us, but I didn’t pay them much attention. As I gaze up at the sky, I glimpse a dove sailing gaily through the clouds. We were on a journey from our familiar Persia to a mysterious land – Chang’an, China.
“Shipp!” an arrow broke the silence. I pulled on the reins sharply, and the horses trotted to a halt. I bent down and picked the arrow up. There was no message, nothing inscribed on it, and the tip was sharp and gleamed red. Poison. The word alone sent shivers down my spine. There was no cure for poison, none at all. I pulled the net down and continued.
More arrows rained down upon us. My men behind started panicking. Nervously, I cracked the whip, and the horses galloped faster. Everyone could see unfriendly
faces peering out from the watchtowers that towered above us, glaring. I tugged on the reins again. “Get the goods!” I hollered to my men. We had brought loads of goods along to trade with the local Chinese. We had brought water clocks from Egypt, rugs from our homeland Persia, books from Denmark... According to my father, Marco Polo had once traveled on this same path as I am on now. He called it the “Silk Road”. One of my friends had been to China before – and pronounced it a prosperous country.
The shriek of a man brought me back from my dreams. “A man has been shot!” Jamal, the physician of our troupe, hurried through the caravans.
The next few weeks went by peacefully. I was beginning to think that we had left the dangers far behind. It was a beautiful morning, in which the sun was rising amid a patch of rose and azure and turquoise and lilac. The light breeze fluttered over the treetops, through the leaves and onto our cheeks. Shooting out of the blue came another caravan, charging towards us. They all had blonde hair and their eyes sunk into their sockets. They bellowed something in a foreign language and one man lifted his forefinger to his lips, crossed both his arms in an “X” and drew his right arm across his neck. It didn’t look good. Everyone quietened down. My heart was leaping and my palms were clammy. They strode over and opened the canopy. The goods were in plain sight. Their eyes gleamed with greed and lunged for the goods. At that split second, my men jumped up and started stabbing the robbers with some daggers. At that, I remembered a book I had once seen from China. picture of a man in a book, fighting. I imitated him and made my hand go in a snake-like shape, kneeled down on one foot and tilted my head up. To my surprise, the robbers froze for a second. As if on cue, they all dropped their weapons, leapt upon their caravan and fled. I was a bit puzzled. What was that I did? Was it Kungfu or what? How come it scared the robbers away? Any way, it would be something from China. Three cheers for China! I put that out of my mind for a second and started scanning the caravans. At least none of our booty was robbed. Everyone hoped that the goods would pay well in China.
A couple of weeks later, the men had huge black lumps on their armpits and
necks. Since Jamal had been killed in the bloodbath, nobody knew what it was. Dozens of my men had already died of it, and dozens more were sick. I could only stand and watch helplessly while my men died, one after another. I had lost all hope of reaching that faraway place – what was it called? I could only fight back tears and bury the lifeless bodies with their blank staring eyes next to the path as a monument of the hardships on the way to the China.
One fateful day, we saw a winding jagged wall coming nearer and nearer to us. Finally, we have reached our destination! There was the rock-paved wall with all those towers coming towards us from the horizon and us hurrahing and cheering. The soldiers, standing bold and tall at the gates, glanced at our permission slip and waved us in. We were into the flourishing city in a moment! How exciting everything seemed to us! As far as the eye could see, there were brick-paved streets and carts of goods pulled by horses.
On the market day, we hurried to the square and put up our goods. We saw a
large character on the wall, “唐”.After what seemed like a century, people started
coming along. Some wealthy people traded 50 yards of silk with us just for a water
clock! And then, a burly man offered to trade 600 bales of ceramics and 500 bolts of silk, so we gave him some myrrh, glass, furs and gemstones. How glad he was! A
lot of people were interested in our books and bought some, even though the
letters didn’t mean anything to them. We put up our newly painted ostrich eggs and immediately some women and children bustled over. They traded them with some ceramic plates for their children. This has been the best day of my life!
Of course, if the men hadn’t died in the bloodbath with the robbers, they might have seen this wonderful day. I wonder if the world would ever be peaceful. I glimpse a dove sailing through the sky, coming to rest on a tree branch. One day perhaps there would be no fighting. One day.

Lost In Times Square

The clock went "Dong!Dong!" It was three in the afternoon, and Times Square was swarming with people. I, was shopping with my mom. Argh! Suddenly, I glimpsed something out of the corner of my eye. Slowly, my curiosity was taking over me. I had never heard of the idiom "curiosity killed the cat", and was pretty sure that Mom would find me. Great! Bingo! TREASURE! I had found DS cards that only cost $10 each! I was just turning around to get mom to make the deal with but oh no! She disappeared into the crowds!

I desperately tried to replay scenes in my mind, but it was blocked and I couldn't recall anything. The tick tock of the massive clock seemed to glare down wheareas it had been my saviour a few minutes ago. Had it been only a few minutes? It seemed like infinity. The enormous hands of the clock seemed to grab me, and the hub seemed like a gigantic nasty eye glaring at me, trying to manage an evil grin at the same time. Without thinking, I stepped onto the elevator instantly. Only when it was too late did I realize that I had stepped onto a devouring machine. The teeth seemed to grab me and chew me into pieces. When was this going to end? It occurred to me that I was going DOWN. Down into hell. Oh no, when would I see my mother again? It was leading into nowhere. I scanned the crowd for a friendly face. There was nobody. Stony expressions surrounded me. Mortified, I was. I dashed up, barging and snaking through the immense crowd. Finally! I got to where I had started. The clock was counting down. When it gets to zero, something would happen - but what?

"My darling daughter! Where have you been?" a familiar voice rose out of the blues "Mother, mother! I was so terrified!" I leapt into a bear hug and sobbed. I will never tempted by "bait" again!

The Meeting Room

It was a usual day in summer. The stifling heat formed beads of sweat on Becky’s forehead and white T-shirt. She sighed heavily. The scorching heat was too much for her to bear. Her nine-year-old brother Benny stuck his head into Becky’s room and whined, “I’m so hot, sis. Can’t we go down to play?”
“The dance room is occupied, the gym room is being repaired, there are trucks on the platform, the playroom is out of service… the meeting room! And there’s air-con too!” replied Becky, counting on her fingers. She darted out of the room and into her papa’s room. “Papa, can we go to the meeting room to play?”
“The meeting room, no! NO! Don’t ever go there!” Papa stuttered without thinking in a bizarre high-pitched voice. Becky furrowed up her brow, rushed out of the bedroom and up into the attic.
Becky had just sat down when a shabby notebook caught her attention. She didn’t like the look of it and was just turning away when an invisible hand wrenched her head brutally towards the notebook. She gasped and looked around cautiously. There was nobody around. She opened the dusty reddish-brown notebook cover. Mysteriously, Becky felt a gust of wind sweeping around her. She closed the notebook quickly and everything died down. She shivered as the window banged shut and locked itself.
“Benny, what are you doing here?” Becky hollered fiercely. Benny looked at her questioningly. His sister seldom yelled at him. Becky gaped. She couldn’t believe her eyes! A long cut appeared on his face as if the devil was marking him, ready to send him to another world…
“Owww…” screamed Benny as he retreated out of the room, clutching his face. Becky wanted to chase after him, to ask if he was okay, to ask for forgiveness. But her feet stayed planted firmly on the ground. The words, “DIARY” seemed like little black eyes, staring at her, forcing her to stay...
Becky, without thinking, opened the cover again. In the tiny writing between the lines, the word “curse” leapt out, returned, and leapt out again. “Cursed?” The word slipped out of her mouth before she could stop it. She wanted to cough, but Becky couldn’t draw enough air into her lungs. Her throat tightened, she couldn’t breathe, she felt as if she was going to die... Flashes of her childhood memories flashed before her. “This must be the end, Mama and Papa must be very sad...” thoughts raced about in her brain. She used her final breath to close the note book... and she could breathe smoothly again!
That very night, she had a nightmare about a witch. The witch hissed devishly, “I am the great Witch Bellatrix! Go to the meeting room! Go to the meeting room! You will find horrors not within your imagination... Go to the meeting room! Go to the meeting room!” And with that, she disappeared into a faint mist in the darkness. Becky told Benny her dream and Benny said that he had the same dream too as a wizard said he was named Lord Voldemort and he urged Benny too to go to the meeting room.
The next day, Becky and Benny felt that their curiosity was overcoming them and set off secretly for the meeting room when they told their parents they were going to the gym room to exercise. It was a nice, sunny day and they trekked across the platform on which the trucks were unloading stuff like furniture and tools like ladders and hammers to the meeting room...
It was all quiet there. Nobody was there. They could suddenly hear some sort of bumping noise. And then a shrill shriek. It was coming from inside the walls. Becky was sure of that. Benny’s face had gone all white. His knuckles, ankles and knees had all gone ghostly white. Becky had no time to worry about him now. Quickly she rushed out of the room and onto the platform, grabbed a huge hammer and darted back into the room and started hammering away at the wall. Huge clouds of dust surrounded them. And then the tiles started falling down.
Becky gasped. If she hadn’t been a fourteen-year-old sensible schoolgirl, she would have fainted. In front of her was a dead corpse. The neck, which hung tightly to a noose, was twisted at a horrific angle.
She spun around to look at her brother. Benny was evolved in a pale, ghostly mist. Benny whispered weakly, “Sis, I’m going. Look after Mama and Papa…” A white figure, just like the “Witch Bellatrix” in Becky’s dream, stepped out of the corpse. She touched Benny on the shoulder. “Little one, we’re going to meet the Lord now... It’s a long way down...” she whispered. Benny looked at his sister with a faraway look in his eyes. Benny and the white figure were sinking deeper and deeper into the white tiles of the floor of the meeting room. “Benny, don’t leave me! Benny! Benny!” Becky leapt towards her beloved brother, her only true friend. But Benny had gone.
Becky’s weak voice echoed round the silent room. It bounced off the walls and all was still.
After six more years, she no longer had nightmares of that terrible, terrible day. It seemed that everything had returned to normal and that Benny had never been born. But one thing was different. Becky hated the colour white.
